Willoughby-Eastlake Library Launches Monthly Reading Program Willoughby-Eastlake Public Library has taken a novel approach to one-book, one-community events, projects that typically run one time a year for a set period of time and encourage citizens to read a single title and then attend discussions and programming around the book’s themes. Willoughby-Eastlake patrons, on the other hand, can look forward to one book, one community-once every month! The library has launched WE Read, a sustained program to recommend quality books and develop programming that helps give patrons more enjoyment from a good read. The program kicks off in February with Manhunt: The 12-Day Chase for Lincoln’s Killer by James L. Swanson, a thrilling true crime story currently being adapted to the screen for a movie to star Harrison Ford. WEPL’s staff includes several veterans of North Coast Neighbors Share a Book, the community book project that began in 2002 by encouraging everyone to read To Kill a Mockingbird. To keep the idea of a communitywide reading event more relevant in 2007, staff decided to make it more “laid back” so that busy patrons can read in their own time, with no feeling of pressure or obligation to attend an organized discussion. Featuring a new book each month means the library can promote more books that cater to a wide variety of interests and attract new readers. As in traditional community read events, the library plans one program or discussion each month to tie in with the featured book, and will offer support to any book groups that would like to discuss the books independently.
